Tension and Release

Tension and Release

For years I’ve been interested in the harmony of tension and release and how that feels somatically and psychologically. I think about an analogy of being on a bike ride. Hands gripping tight on the handlebars for a few miles. At the end of the ride when you first let go your hands have this tightened muscle memory and aren’t quite ready for full extension. This moment in between you’re able to move freely but need to be reminded of that freedom.

There are moments in life that mimic that same sensation. Daily life, anxiety and trauma binding up your muscles and mind. When you’re finally in a safe place to let go. The sensation in the transition is uncomfortable but necessary.

I’ve found an inspiration in my own grounding practice of walking in nature. I think something everyone can relate to. The physicality of the action and the space it can of often make mentally. A direct connection is replicating the motifs that show up, like eelgrass. Bound up and simultaneously dancing with freedom.
